Although not until the launch of Office 2013

Professional networking site LinkedIn are to provide better integration with Outlook once Office 2013 is launched, which will allow users to access LinkedIn data from directly within Office, without the need for a further download.

The ‘Outlook Social Connector’ will sync with LinkedIn automatically; sign in to Outlook with your LinkedIn details and you will have access to everything your connections are up to. Further to this, anyone who emails you with a LinkedIn profile (if they have a person card) will immediately give you access to their photograph, updates, profile information and so on.

Another Twitter outage, Facebook losses, Skype deny surveillance claims

Twitter suffered another outage this week that saw users unable to use the social site for over an hour. The problem has been blamed on a “noteworthy double failure in its data centres”, although personally I had my account hacked on the same day and was required to change my password. Call me cynical but that would seem to be one of those coincidences that I don’t believe in.

“I wish I could say that today’s outage could be explained by the Olympics or even a cascading bug,” Mazen Rawashdeh, VP of engineering, said in a statement. “Instead, it was due to this infrastructural double-whammy.”

Written by Mark Mitchell
July 27th, 2012

Guest blogging has become increasingly popular and for a number of reasons. In this post Penguin world, where guest blogging offers a range of SEO benefits, there are also a number of non-search engine related practical pluses too.

Guest blogging allows you to shine as an expert in a specific subject on a range of other blogs and also even enables you to get a few pounds on the side. However, foremost it’s a great way of getting those quality backlinks and gets traffic to your own site from someone else’s.

However, the biggest issue with guest blogging is not the posting, but getting people who allow you to post. So, how do you increase the chances of this becoming a reality?

You might not have heard, but a little sporting competition called the Olympic Games starts this Friday. The long road to the opening ceremony has been an arduous one (not to mention parodied mercilessly in the BBC’s behind the scenes mockumentary Twenty Twelve), but the stadium is finally built, the international visitors are landing in droves, and the athletes themselves are gearing up for what is certain to be the most social-media savvy Olympics yet.

The Aurora Tragedy and Twitter

Written by Mark Mitchell
July 24th, 2012

The tragic shooting that occurred in Aurora near Denver, Colorado at the Batman: The Dark Knight Rises premiere prompted an outpouring of news of the event as it happened, as well as capturing the horror of the event via victim and witness tweets as it happened.

The shooting, which left 12 dead and 70 more injured, was carried out by a neuroscience PhD student, who had recently dropped out. It seems that the first place that people turn these days is not traditional news channels, but Twitter, as the social media site relays events as they happen much quicker than the major channels can.

Apple ordered to run Samsung Ads, Cyber Attack Competition, Grum Spambot taken down

Apple has been ordered by a British judge to publish ads that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad, following a court ruling that Samsung tablets did not infringe on any of Apple’s patents.

The ruling decided that Samsung hadn’t aped the iPad, as it just didn’t look as cool and aesthetically pleasing as the Apple tablet (talk about a double-edged victory eh). It seems that discussions were then held in which it was decided that, not only will Apple have to publish an announcement on its website for a minimum of six months, but also in print publications. Facebook for your International Audience

Written by Mark Mitchell
July 20th, 2012

Successfully posting on Facebook posts involves a number of variables, from the quality and engagement of the post, to the followers, to of course the timings.

In fact, timing is everything on Facebook and getting the post right is about hitting your target audience at a time when they are firstly online and secondly most willing to respond. This is as success on Facebook is bred from previous success on Facebook thanks to the EdgeRank algorithm.

The more likes you got in the past, the more likely it is that the post will stay in the timeline of people who haven’t witnessed it yet and in turn the more likely they are to see it and then like it too. Of course with many businesses working on an international level thanks to the World Wide Web, you have to consider where the majority of your customers are and this may not be in your time zone.

Written by Mark Mitchell
July 19th, 2012

It should be an unspoken rule of life that you do not create a Twitter account if you are going through a breakdown; the temptation to broadcast every stray thought and impulse is just too great. Perhaps Charlie Sheen has finally learned this lesson, as he signed off from the social network last Thursday with the message; “Reach for the stars everyone.”

Below are five celebrities, including Sheen himself, who have made the most of the micro-blogging site to make themselves look very foolish indeed. (more…)
