How Facebook and Twitter may Decline

Written by Kerry Butters

The rise of social media has been nothing less than epic over the past decade but like any other business model, there’s no guarantee that it will last forever. Facebook, in particular, has become a hotbed for malware, they can’t get their mobile platforms to work properly and the layout and newsfeed has become intolerable to many.

Advertising has also become a problem for the social media giant and Forbes report that its US users have dropped by 1.1%, further reports from Reuters suggest that “of the 23 countries where Facebook’s penetration exceeded 50 percent, only nine expanded their user base over the past three months, while the remaining 14 countries either had fewer users or saw little change.”

Is LoveIt more than just a copycat social network?

There’s a new social network on the block which is set to make quite the stir. Yes, that’s right, another one. At first glance, LoveIt appears to be indistinguishable from Pinterest, the digital pinboard du jour. And that resemblance is intentional; the creators of LoveIt are hoping to capitalise on the immense popularity of Pinterest by adopting (some would say stealing) the familiar model and merely tweaking it in regards to its functionality and purpose.

Social media management

I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard about Buffer, the social media streamlining app, as there are a fair few out there, with each presented as the second coming in the social media world. Of course, with the increase in social media outlets comes the inevitable addition of aggregation, management and analytics apps, but not all are created equal. After a little time with Buffer (and a few abortive attempts with other social media management apps), I’ve come to the conclusion that Buffer offers the best all-round versatility ease of use. In short, I love it!

Facebook Security: Why are people still falling for scams?

Profile viewer scam remains the most popular

Last January, a report from security experts Sophos stated Facebook as being the biggest contributing factor these days to internet security. The firm carried out a poll which found that 82% of people consider the social networking site to be the biggest threat of all the social media channels out there and yet, a year on, nothing much seems to have changed.

One of the biggest scams around at the time was the fake ‘see who has viewed your profile’ messages. Whilst many of us don’t actually care who’s viewed our profile, unless of course you’re worried about a stalker, many apparently still do.

If I Die, And Other Apps Of Interest

Define your legacy, calculate your heart rate and have fun with streaming live videos

“What will you leave behind?” is the query posed in a promotional video for If I Die 1st, a new project from the If I Die Facebook application. The purpose of the ad is not simply to ask profound questions, but to invite Facebook users to record individual messages, with the promise of World Fame to one lucky entrant.

It sounds like a pretty tempting proposition, but there’s a catch. The app will broadcast your personalised message across Facebook and other sites like technology blog Mashable, gaining you a global audience, but only if you are the first of its users to die. In addition to this rather unique competition, the If I Die app enables people to compose messages that will be sent to friends and family on Facebook after their deaths.

Plan, plan and then plan some more

Many people in business have quite a ‘hit and miss’ approach to content which doesn’t really do them much good when they are attempting to gain customers through having a variety of platforms such as blogs, social media campaigns and so on.

Where many fall down is by not having a content strategy in place; this is essential if you are to engage with your audience and it’s vital that you plan effectively. Just like when you begin a business, you make a business plan – usually this is something that is reviewed constantly in order to ensure the business is going in the right direction.

When it comes to planning content, a similar approach should be taken, after all, it is bound to be becoming a large aspect of your business, whatever industry you’re in.
