Facebook false likes cull

Social giants Facebook have begun to cull the amount of Facebook  false likes that appear on pages following an increase in their “automated efforts” to get rid of the fakers. They say that this will, on average, mean a 1% drop in likes for pages overall.

Facebook False likes can be generated in a number of ways, including through malware, hacked accounts or the bulk-buying of purchased likes. Facebook don’t endorse the latter and say they have never permitted the purchase or sale of likes on the site.

An Introduction to Reddit and How to Utilise it

Reddit, if you don’t already know is a content platform that brings the best of the web together – essentially a social media news platform.

Users vote quality content submitted by others up or down through the use of Karma points. These are one of the main dictators to prevent spam. Reddit reduces spam quite simply but providing people with such Karma points for comments and links being voted positively. However, if you spam and receive consistent down votes then you will be restricted from submitting links and articles.

Sub-Reddits are areas where people’s niche interests come together and they talk to others interested in similar topics. These Sub-Reddits are run by fans of activities, pastimes or brands. All this sounds great – so how do you effectively build Sub Reddit Communities?

Images, Emotions and Engagement

Have you ever wondered why videos of babies and animals do so well on YouTube? Or perhaps you’ve noticed that if you combine the two and make a video of a baby animal doing something funny, the internet seems to explode? It’s all down to the cute factor, and according to Jessica Mason, its popularity is easily explained by its universal appeal. Cat videos get huge amounts of views on YouTube because they evoke an emotional response, whether it be making someone laugh or nearly driving them to tears. These responses are important because “they make boundaries, language, cultural barriers, irrelevant”, Mason stated this week, at the Social Good Summit.

The Return of MySpace

MySpace, was the once darling of the Internet world, though interestingly followed a similar path to ruin on a somewhat comparable timeline to American Pie’s Tara Reid. Now both are back!Though it’s obviously only MySpace we have any interest in.

Tuesday, the company, now owned by Justin Timberlake previewed a video of its redesign and frankly we were impressed. It seems that MySpace is looking to integrate with the current social media behemoths Twitter and Facebook in a similar manner to that of Pinterest and YouTube. The video of the social media re-release showed people finding people via Facebook as well as the posting of Tweets through a MySpace account – all very pleasant.

Written by Christopher Reynolds
September 24th, 2012

Last week saw HTC announce two new devices for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system – the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S. Both phones are being touted as ‘signature’ devices for WP8, with HTC claiming it is the flagship manufacturer for the OS. So does this mean the highly-regard Taiwanese vendor is moving away from Android and into the loving embrace of Microsoft?

Twitter bans gifs from new format, ‘Poison Ivy’ IE exploit, iPad mini first pics, Mum finds out about daughter’s death on Facebook, Gangman style

As we reported earlier in the week, Twitter has changed its layout to allow people to display cover photos in a similar way to Facebook. However, it seems that since the changes were made, users are now finding themselves unable to upload animated GIFs to use as their avatar on the site.

Whilst users who already have animated GIFs on their profile will be unaffected, those attempting to upload new ones will find that the images remain static.

Forget about the iPhone 5, if you can, for just one moment. The iPhone 4 and 4S are still perfectly valid and relevant choices – honest! If a report over at Mashable.com this week is to be believed, Apple have no immediate plans to release a dock for the iPhone 5 and its brand new “Lightning” design connector. So until a third party manufacturer steps up to the mark with their own docking station design, sticking with the iPhone 4 or 4S seems to be the most prudent move. And don’t worry – technology developers are still coming up with a number of ingenious uses for the older models. Below is a round-up of the handiest and coolest ancillary products that can still be used with the traditional 30 pin connector. See? Not obsolete at all!

Twitter New Look – Now includes cover photo option and improved backgrounds

Twitter really hasn’t made many changes since it was first launched in 2006 and whilst it’s possible to personalise the background of your profile with your own design, this feature is not something that has really caught on for the average user.

However, this has recently changed and it’s now possible to upload a cover photo, similar to Facebook Timeline’s cover pics. Of course, many bemoan the frequent changes to Facebook as it does tend to make the site somewhat ‘buggy’ and of course, some people prefer a format they’re familiar with.
